How to restore a deleted VM from a backup copy

This article describes how to restore a virtual machine (VM) if the original VM was deleted, but its backup copy was preserved.

Only the contents of the VM disk can be restored. Information about the VM that was specified in the platform - name, owner, note, etc. cannot be restored.

Example of a problem: A VM is deleted and only its backup copy is left. It is necessary to create a VM with the same configuration on the node. How to link the backup copy to the new machine and restore it, if by default the backup copy is linked to the deleted VM?

Solution

To restore a VM from a backup:

  1. Create a VM with the same configuration as the remote VM.
  2. Stop the created VM: Virtual machines → select the VM →   menu Stop.
  3. Copy the backup file to the server with the platform.
  4. Replace the disk from the VM backup:
    1. Extract the zst archive of the backup to get the disk of the original VM:

      unzstd <file_name>
    2. Import the resulting disk following the instructions Importing a VM to VMmanager.
  5. Start the VM: Virtual machines → select the VM →   menu Start.
  6. If necessary, connect to the VM and change its network settings.
